Nomad Hack

This week, the Cardano Community was taken by surprise when a hack was reported on the Nomad bridge. An unknown hacker exploited a smart contract in Nomad bridge and stole 200 million worth of assets.

Sadly this also affected several Cardano-related projects and investors who used their platform to bridge assets from Ethereum over to Cardano. Impacted projects among others:

  • WingRiders
  • MuesliSwap
  • Charli3
  • Milkomeda

The exploit unchained lots of interesting discussions in our community. Some are also asking for projects to open source their code. For more Informations - Blog Post by WatcherGuru.

Vasil Hard Fork

In the latest Cardano360 IOG’s Technology Manager, Kevin Hammond, announced that the Vasil hard fork would be delayed further.

The initial release was planned for June 29, but taking into account the collapse of UST algorithmic pegging, IOG then decided to conduct additional testing in the Plutus suite, including more quality assurance testing. As a result of this DApp developers asked extra time to test the upgrade.

Once all bugs are ironed out, a new release could take a few more weeks because of the required time to coordinate with exchanges and SPOs. We will continue to keep you up to date as more news becomes available.

Ledger Live

Recently, the Ledger Live integration of Cardano was rolled out. And now, it was announced that they have also integrated over 100 Cardano tokens. WMT, DANA, ADAX, and more are all available to manage from the security of Ledger. A complete list of tokens that are supported can be found here.

Bitrue Exchanges supports Community Pools

Bitrue, an exchange headquartered in Singapore wants to contribute to the decentralization of Cardano by staking with community pools. They will each delegate 1,000,000 ADA to various community pools. The Community Pools can nominate themselves via a Google Form or be nominated by other community members. At this time, it is unknown when and how many community pools will receive a delegation. Tweet source

Cardano Timeline Visualization

Have you ever tried creating a visual map of the Cardano ecosystem? If you have, you probably realized after a few minutes that it is not as easy as it sounds. Faced with the same challenge, the team at Visual Cardano came up with the idea of creating a competition for the best visual Cardano ecosystem map. Visual Cardano has submitted a proposal in Fund 8 of Project Catalyst that was successfully funded by the community. The community created four stunning visualizations. To decide a winner, the community can vote until the 15th of August 2022.

Cardano metrics

Since the beginning of 2022, we have seen a 31% increase in the number of wallets on Cardano. Surpassing 3,500,000 Million during the first days of August.

NFT Blockchain-backed clothing brand

Every month, we learn of more and more projects launching on Cardano. One of these projects is Origin Thread - a blockchain-backed clothing brand. What makes this project unique is the inclusion of an NFT tag. The shirt’s owner can scan the NFC tag and view a video of its creation, including fully transparent, on-chain sourcing information.

Ambassador Program

This week, the Community Team has completed all Ambassador applications for July month. Of a total of 26 applications, five qualified for the program, Anthony was one of them. The selected nominees will be presented in their Ambassador Story shortly.

Soft fork

A modification to the software protocol that renders previously valid transaction blocks invalid. A soft fork is backwards-compatible since old nodes will identify the new blocks as legitimate. In contrast to a hard fork, which needs all nodes to update and agree on the new version, this type of fork merely means a majority of miners to update in order to enforce the new regulations.

Understanding soft fork usage

Soft forks are frequently used to add new transaction kinds, requiring only that the participants (e.g., sender and recipient) and miners comprehend the new transaction type. This is accomplished by presenting the new transaction to older clients as a “pay-to-anybody” transaction (in a special form) and convincing miners to consent to refuse blocks containing these transactions until the transaction verifies under the proposed regulations. Pay-to-script hash (P2SH) was implemented to Bitcoin in this manner.

Cardano Wiki

Luck (ouroboros)

The total stake of a pool consists of ADA coins of the pool operator (pledge) and delegated ADA coins. The size of the pool determines the chances of the pool to become a slot leader and create a new block in the assigned slots. However, the chance is not purely proportional to pool size. For the sake of protocol security, an element of chance comes into play.

Let’s say that, based on a calculation that takes into account the proportional size of pools, a given pool has 40 slots in an epoch in which it can create a new block. This is the expected number. However, due to randomness, it may happen that a pool is assigned a larger or smaller number of slots. In the end, the pool can create either 45 or 35 blocks. Pool performance is calculated as the number of blocks that a pool has produced in a given epoch, divided by the expected number of blocks.

When the pool has created 45 blocks, its performance is 112.5%. When it has only created 35 blocks, its performance is 87.5%, The pool reward per epoch reflects the performance of the pool, so it can be higher or lower. It is important to know that it does not matter whether a pool is currently above or below 100% of the expected performance. Within a longer period of time the randomness is fair so the performance is expected to be ~100% provided that the pool creates blocks in all assigned slots. Source
