Education Beyond the Classroom - Konsensis May Update (2024)

Konsensis is an educational program working on onboard refugees to Cardano with a special focus on refugee women in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement in Uganda.

Module: 6
Topic: Transactions
Task: Request funds from testnet faucet and facilitate transactions with the other students.

Background
One of the key lessons that we have been working towards, is for the students to understand how to transact on Cardano. From wallet setup, navigating the wallet and being able to successfully send and receive ADA/tokens from someone else. Because this is a new concept for all, we have made sure to repeat this step as many times as necessary to make sure that they are comfortable enough and understand the process. To complete this process we have been working in pre-prod and utilising testnet ADA.

Initially, we wanted the students to go to the faucet, request tokens and then continue with the transactions, To simplify the process, we decided it would be best if we acted as the faucet, we had the students request testnet funds from us directly and continue by sending to other students in the classroom.

Challenge:
We noticed early on that it was challenging for some to understand the importance of keeping your seed phrase safe, but also storing it in a way that you have access to whenever you need it. To combat this, we decided that every session would start by either recovering an existing wallet or creating a new one. This way, every student would be on the same page and start from scratch. Some would have the advantage of previous activities and having more test-ADA than others and were therefore able to facilitate more transactions.

Conclusion:
After wallet setup and seed phrase registration, locating wallet address and sending it for tADA, the next steps went smoothly and the students managed to complete more than 50 transactions on testnet. In the days following, we also saw a few testing transactions outside of class.

Olympus Insights Partnership:

Because we are limited to 10 students at a time to ensure the best quality of education, moving forward we will be introducing a new alternative model for our incoming students.

We recently partnered up with Olympus Insights, who have created Oli, an online platform created not only to educate but also reward students.

Through Oli, we will be able to reach a wider audience and facilitate a safe learning environment for more students by leveraging their easy to use online platform combined with our on-site staff who are able to guide new students. Additionally, the students will be able to attend direct educational courses the same way that we have been doing with the initial group.

We are nearing the beta test for our beginner course on Oli where we have selected a few of our existing students to test. We will also be inviting new students to take part in this so that we can better map out the quality of the courses and also fine-tune along the way.

Oli Ambassadors:
The Konsensis students will later on be able to join the The Oli ambassadors program which allows existing students to onboard a new wave of learners. By inviting their friends and families, students will earn rewards that can be converted to their preferred currency.

Catalyst Fund 12 Proposal:
Our initial program focused on refugee women in Uganda, which gave us valuable insights into their understanding of the financial systems and how blockchain can address their current challenges. This also helped us refine and optimise our courses to be more relevant to their ambitions.

Building on g our successful three-month program with the ten women, we are looking to expand our introductory course significantly. That is why we have made a proposal for the Catalyst Fund 12.

The month of May has truly been an eye-opener and it is always great to see how much our students have been learning moving from one course to the other. We are excited to continue to the next courses, where we will be diving deeper into Cardano Native Tokens (CNTs) and creating more advanced transactions.

To end the review, one of our students have written a letter about her experience with the course:

From Refugee to Blockchain Believer

Life wasn’t always about Cardano transactions. Here in Uganda, things are different. As a refugee, hope sometimes feels like a distant flicker. But then, something amazing happened. I had the chance to join a training program on Cardano, a new kind of financial system.

My name is Vivian, and let me tell you, this training is a beacon of light. Here, surrounded by nine other amazing women, we learn the ins and outs of this blockchain technology. It might sound complicated, but trust me, with every lesson, I started seeing more and more of the potential of this amazing system.

Suddenly, finance wasn’t a mystery anymore. We learned how to create transactions with confidence, how this whole system could transform our lives. It wasn’t just about money, it was about resilience for us and our families. It was about being included, having a say in our financial future.

The best part? We weren’t alone in this journey. The program fostered a network of strong women, all eager to share knowledge and support each other. It enriched the whole learning experience, turning it into something truly special.

Now, armed with this newfound knowledge, we’re ready to take on the world (well, at least the Cardano ecosystem!). We want to actively contribute to our community’s economic growth and empower other women to do the same. This training wasn’t just about skills, it was about igniting a fire within us. A fire for financial independence, a fire for a brighter future.

But this journey doesn’t end here. The knowledge we gained shouldn’t stay with just a handful of us. We need your support. We want to share this newfound power with our fellow sisters in Uganda, and beyond.

Together, with Cardano in our hands, we can build a more sustainable and prosperous future, not just for ourselves, but for our entire community. This is our story. We are #CardanoGirls, and we are just getting started
