Lottery odds

This is almost but not quite completely off-topic: I heard it during a radio program in which Gerolamo Cardano was also mentioned, as a gambling theorist.

It seems that people who buy tickets for the UK National Lottery are 100 times more likely to die during the 24 hour period before the draw (or any 24 hour period I guess) than win it. (Odds approx 45m:1.)

OT, as I say, but a very nice stat IMO.

Nice

I recently heard a story that when all issued lottery cards where alligned along the outher European borders (Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, again Spain and France, UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland…) the jackpots would only cover 3.5 meters.
Gerolamo Cardano’s vita is worth reading it.

Cardano was notoriously short of money and kept himself solvent by being an accomplished gambler and chess player. His book about games of chance, Liber de ludo aleae (“Book on Games of Chance”), written around 1564,[14] but not published until 1663, contains the first systematic treatment of probability,[15] as well as a section on effective cheating methods
