To be fair they also built a “marketplace” (yet to be launched) https://akkadia.io/ and started selling NFTs. Something that multiple teams achieve with bootstrapped funding 
If I remember correctly there was a question if I’d like to be compensated, but choose not to, so as to keep integrity of not being associated with NFTDAO any longer.
