Only 7 slot Leaders thus far, does that mean we only have 7 node processing transactions?

Hi guys,

I am currently poking around the cardano explorer API and found that for each CBlockEntry, there is a field called cbeBlockLead. https://cardanodocs.com/technical/explorer/api/

I assume this would be the address(?) for the slot leader.

I tried to tally up how many distinct cbeBlockLead we have since epoch 1, and surprisingly, only found 7 of them, with evenly distributed # of slots led.

Does that mean we currently have only 7 machines processing all transactions, and when staking is opened, we will see more ?

Thanks!

I’d guess so. And going by the evenness of the distribution it looks like they all went online at the same time.

Until the Shelly release, all block generation is done by IOHK for free. As you may have notice, there is a very low TPS so they ensure the network stays alive by simple geo-replication.
IOHK intends to progressively hand things over to the community as the project progresses. Charles mentions the process here and there in a few different Youtube interviews.

Found this as well in doing the explorer. For now, the 186k active wallets are being serviced by those 7 slot leaders, but once staking starts, we should see as many as 100 slot leaders.

For the record, it’s not only IOHK but also Cardano Foundation and Emurgo, all these are independent organizations/companies (at least we told so :).

That’s correct

Thanks LLFourn! Love your blog posts btw, one of the very few blogger worth reading and not just shillshillshill

Thanks guys, this clears things up. I am impressed that 7 nodes were able to handle the current load (even though it’s not large) with high confirmation.

@bearbearbowl good work

@LLFourn pls post link to blog, wish to read.

Yes, I’ll be posting some working Perl 6 code in Unraveling the Ouroboros soon.
