1. Problem Description
The current implementation of “Rational Privacy” within the Midnight/Cardano ecosystem allows for Shielded Metadata to be used as a cloaking device for state-sponsored violence. Specifically, the “Kūkolu” (Federated) phase enables node operators to “sponsor” transactions that use humanitarian labels (e.g., REFUGEE_STABILITY_GRANT) to mask “Performance-Based Bounties” for kinetic military actions.
Because the ZK-proofs only verify the validity of the transaction and not the intent or context of the recipient (e.g., proximity to military strikes), the network is currently facilitating “Automated Harm” while remaining technically “compliant.”
2. Impact
- Ethical Erosion: The “Can’t Be Evil” mantra is bypassed by actors who are “mathematically compliant but morally predatory.”
- Systemic Risk: If the Cardano Treasury is found to be indirectly subsidizing these “Humanitarian Masks” via grants or liquidity, the entire ecosystem faces massive regulatory and ethical collapse.
- Ahimsa Violation: The network becomes an efficient, private engine for the destruction of life.
3. Proposed Evaluation Criteria
- Metadata Correlation Audit: Can we develop a decentralized “Canary” tool that flags ZK-proof spikes that correlate 1:1 with kinetic events in conflict zones?
- Geofenced Intent Proofs: Can we introduce an optional (but rewarded) ZK-proof layer that verifies a recipient is not in a high-intensity kinetic zone when receiving “Humanitarian” designated funds?
- Sponsorship Transparency: Require Federated Node Operators to disclose the volume (not the content) of DUST-sponsored transactions originating from OFAC-licensed “General License” entities.
