Cardano’s Chang Hard Fork Initiated: On-Chain Governance Begins

On September 1, 204, at 21:44:51 UTC, Cardano successfully underwent the eagerly awaited Chang #1 Hard Fork at the boundary to epoch 506. This pivotal moment ushers in a new era for the Cardano blockchain, ecosystem, and community, fulfilling the vision of a self-governing, fully self-sustaining, community-driven, and truly decentralized network.

The Chang Hard Fork unfolds in two distinct phases. The first phase, now live, introduces an Interim Constitutional Committee (ICC) to temporarily oversee Cardano’s governance. This cautious approach ensures the committee’s power is limited in making changes to the blockchain’s code while the broader governance model of the ecosystem is being established.

However, it’s important to note that decisions are not only made by the ICC. The hard fork initiation and protocol parameters also require approval from the Stake Pool Operators, adding an additional layer of oversight and ensuring that key protocol changes are vetted by the broader network.

The second phase, Chang Upgrade #2, can at the earliest be implemented after 18 epochs, roughly 90 days after the Chang #1. This is in line with the guardrails for the interim period set forth in the Interim Constitution. With Chang Upgrade #2, expect the unlocking of the full on-chain governance capabilities as described in CIP-1694, including treasury withdrawals and active participation by DReps. Step into the Conway Era: Become a Cardano Delegated Representative

As Cardano transitions into the Conway era, the Chang #1 Hard Fork has introduced significant changes to the network’s governance. This new upgrade, named inspired by the mathematician John Horton Conway, replaces the old Shelley model and creates new opportunities for community involvement through the role of Delegated Representatives (DReps).

Why Become a DRep?
DReps are vital to Cardano’s governance, representing the voting power of those who delegate their ada. As a DRep, you’ll have the authority to influence decisions on protocol changes, hard forks, and more, ensuring that the community’s voice guides Cardano’s evolution.

Get Involved
Registering early as a DRep places you at the forefront of this transformation. A refundable deposit of 500 ada is required to get started.

For a deeper dive into the role and its impact, check out the full article on the forum, here. Discover how you can help shape Cardano’s decentralized governance and participate in this pivotal moment in its history.
