How to install Plutus Playground development environment on Linux?

recommendation currently is to use the Plutus Playground in the Browser, but with some tinkering you can install it local. Please see this thread for details on the issue you might run into:
I’ve been trying to get plutus playground running locally as well and found it challenging. The git issue has been closed “No, this issue is not going to be resolved, and we have removed the docker images for the playgrounds.”
I think our only option is to install nix + npm and follow lecture 1 of the pioneer program
