I want to run a Stake Pool

Guys, It’s not a secret.

I started with the standard AWS Ubuntu. I updated and upgraded everything.

Then I followed these instructions:

Read the whole document before starting. There are 3 ways to do it. I did it the first way - using Nix.

Then do these instructions to make the script so you can run:

cf_ that means you work for the foundation and know stuff right?

Two technical questions:

  1. How sophisticated will the delegation of stake be. If my pool goes offline, am I just stuck with that, or can it roll over to a second, third, fourth delegate? This makes quite a bit of difference to the people who are planning to run pools, in terms of the amount of redundancy they need to incorporate.

  2. If I delegate to a stake pool and that pool produces a bad block, I lose all my money - correct? This seems fair if it was intentional, however I think it is very likely that at some point this happens accidentally, memory corruption or something like that. Has this scenario been considered?

Many thanks,
M.

Why Nix is preferred:
Nixos-stack2

For all you Debian/Ubuntu, RHEL /CentOS users out there, check out running nix on a lightweight chroot (unprivileged user) container on any system.

Big HINT, no matter which Linux version you decide on you should adjust your filesystem for Cardano's blockchain and meta-data.

Cardano’s blockchain contains many small files, to accommodate that reality we optimize the ext4 filesystems defaults:

Example during install:
Note - your /dev/sdb path will be different, probably.

mkfs.ext4 -b 1024 -i 1024 -I 128 /dev/sdb

You should then assign your “home” disk to /dev/sdb

mount /dev/sdb /home

Home will then serve up Cardano’s blockchain in the most efficient way possible.

Cardano Node Docker mentioned in https://www.facebook.com/emurgo.io/videos/1630623896984364/

It would be good to know the answer to these questions.

@MARTIN_SMITH Hello Martin!

It does mean that I work for Cardano Foundation, as to being the font of knowledge for technical aspects, not so much

I’ve made a note of the questions and will get back to you

Kind regards,

Jon

Hi @MARTIN_SMITH - staking right now is under development. The delegation team are making good progress though and we and IOHK will be answering specific questions as soon as we have accurate and firm answers

Is there a place we can be written on a list so you know we want to participate? Charles talked about that in one of his videos.

Thank you, perfectly reasonable reply.

Hi @madsravn we are all eagerly awaiting more information! We are expecting stake pool registrations to start soon to take part in a testnet. This could happen soon (this month), but will depend on IOHK’s Shelly development progress. This forum will be notified as soon as more details are available - stay tuned!

Hi, I’m interested in learning more about your ADA stake pool. Thanks!

I intend on applying to get a node. Not much more I can say. Everyone right
now is making empty promises since applications aren’t even out yet. There
are going to be a lot of people stuffing the application box to try and get
one of the 25-50 slots. I’m going to do my best stand out, I think I have a
good shot at being selected but going into the reasons why publicly at this
time would be detrimental since its anticipated that the application
process will be competitive.

What is the reason for the 25-50 limit? I would have thought you would want as many as possible.

If CF are taking themselves out of the equation, and lets say there are 30 nodes, then if someone takes out 16 nodes, network stops.

20-100 limit is only for the testing phase. Once Shelley is released we expect no limit to the number of staking pools. IOHK will encourage pools/nodes to drive decentralization and secure the network.

There are no limits once Shelley goes live.

Only so many hours in a day, want to get node operators who know their way around Unix/Linux before opening the door to all.

I cant speak to IOHK’s reasoning. There will be more later but this is the
starting point

does it mean when you follow this steps you’re already running a node? Will it be the same steps when Shelley goes live?

I concur and trust it is the situation. Assuming this is the case, expenses ought to be minute since there are no huge expenses or obstructions, which is perfect for selection of the tech regardless of whether a portion of these salivating pool-administrators to-be are frustrated.
I plan on applying to get a hub. Very little more I can state. Everybody right
presently is making void guarantees since applications aren’t level out yet. There
will be many individuals stuffing the application box to attempt and get
one of the 25-50 spaces. I will do my best emerge.
