Amazing the difference disabling tracemempool can do. We did the same just for that reason.

I thought I read somewhere that in 1.26.1, it’ll be better…

I can confirm that (for the moment) in 1.26.1 it is better. I turned mempool tracing back on on my relay and CPU load is about 2-3% (just turned enabled it 15 minutes ago).
