I see that some pools miss slots occasionally (even without slot battles).
My question is. What happens then?
Will another pool be more likely to take up the slack? Or will there be a small “hole” in the scheduled blocks?
No other block will be created, I believe the transactions will be included into the next one

Unless the particular pool was scheduled to make a block, there is no effect of missing the slot.
19 out of 20 slots are block-less anyway.

I was hoping there would be some additional mechanism to reward extremely reliable pools.
But I suppose the reward is that you hit all the assigned blocks (with the exception of slot battles) and that delegators see your performance and further stake into your pool.
