What is exactly Veridian? Technology, Company, Governance, business model

Hi there, Veridian team and leaders,

I am working on a project and the Veridian wallet could help us building the project.

I would need to understand what is Veridian exactly, I understand that the technology is opensource and owned by Cardano Foundation, and that veridian.id is a company in Portugal with commercial goals.

What is the exact governance model for the technology?

Who is owning and leading the company? I found for now any information about a registered society. And what is the vision and roadmap.

I am looking for a fully opensourced decentralized identity/ authentication system, like those based on Keri.

To do so I need to understand who owns, steers, governs the technology, in order to chose the most future proof one.

Understanding opensource and business philosophy & vision the owners/leaders have, is part of the overall discernement. Indeed, opensource projects may become less open over time, and become more proprietary.

So, the targeted business model is then an important topic.

OSS Community quality is also an other criteria.

So in brief, Veridian as a project is currently transitioning into becoming its own for profit operating company, due to the commercial interest in vLEI issuance / KERI tooling and associated solutions.

That said, the strategic commitment remains that the core Veridian libraries will remain open source. The Veridian team plans to continue to put resources into these core libraries, alongside the KERI stack, which is also open source.

For obvious reasons, the developer community around Veridian is still small, but there is significant interest by many projects and the team would very much welcome additional contributors!

Firstly I need to explore rapidly where the Veridian app actually does and really offers today.

Unfortunately I did not manage to test the app since it requires a “Veridian Sandbox” access…I do not really know what it is, and why I would need to register somewhere, since its aim is to deliver sovereign ID…

…nevertheless I did not manage to find where to get the sandbox access, since the link from the docs forward to the main page. Introduction

But maybe I am missing something :person_shrugging:

There is a self-deployment version of how to do things and a sandbox version that Veridian provides. Pick your preference.

Another question if you might answer here.

Based on your website, I observe that Veridian.id is 100% focused on the gov & corporate sectors, which is understandable since vLEI / KERI has its roots in those sectors.

Unless I am mistaken, there is no presence in alternative/solidarity economy ecosystems that are/would looking for resilience and decentralized self-sovereign identity solutions.

How do you consider Veridian as a solution for the civil society sector, and broadly for the individuals / consumers / household sector?

I don’t see any reason why it could not be used for the use cases you mention.
