Zivana Protocol: Phase 0 Complete: Building Trust Infrastructure for the African Informal Economy on Cardano

At Nextrium Global Innovations, we just completed two months of foundation validation work, and we want to share what we built, what we found, and why we chose Cardano as the base layer.

The problem we are addressing

85% of Africa’s workforce operates in the informal economy (ILO, 2024). This sector generates between 30 and 65% of GDP across sub-Saharan African countries. The people in it are not economically inactive. They are highly active, with real track records, real community trust, and real economic history.

The problem is that almost none of it is portable.

Nearly 500 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack legal identity documentation (World Economic Forum). 37% of unbanked adults name documentation gaps as a direct barrier to financial access (World Bank Global Findex). The infrastructure that was supposed to serve them was designed elsewhere and optimized for different realities. The result is that economic capability exists but cannot be verified, which means it cannot be financed.

Zivana Protocol is being built to address this at the infrastructure layer. Not an app. Infrastructure: the kind that allows cooperatives to issue verifiable credentials to members, that allows economic activity to be attested on-chain, and that allows a trust score to be proven above a threshold without the underlying data being disclosed.

Why Cardano

We did not choose Cardano for ecosystem positioning. We chose it because the eUTxO model, Cardano’s on-chain data availability, and the Midnight integration give us the specific properties this use case actually requires: deterministic contract execution for covenant mechanics, on-chain DID anchoring via Hyperledger Identus, and native ZK capabilities for privacy-preserving proof on Midnight.

What Phase 0 proved

We ran six validation exercises on real infrastructure, not local emulators:

VAL-001 proved the eUTxO settlement layer: an Aiken validator locking and distributing funds to beneficiaries on the basis of a structured redeemer. Nine tests, nine passes, each invoking the actual validator handler directly.

VAL-002 proved Midnight’s zero-knowledge privacy layer: a Compact circuit that proves a trust score clears a threshold without revealing the score. Two-tier threshold extension. Eight previously undocumented engineering challenges were encountered and resolved, all published.

VAL-003 proved the self-sovereign identity layer: end-to-end W3C DID publication, credential issuance, and presentation verification across three independent Hyperledger Identus nodes on Cardano preprod. On-chain evidence at transaction f6becc5272cf26a328c5d822390a5fee68a769bc23b26e3fcf11f8e075688389, block 4,894,745, fee of 183,365 lovelace confirmed paid. Seven previously undocumented engineering findings were published, including the critical NODE_LEDGER=cardano requirement that prism-node defaults to in-memory without it.

VAL-004 proved the oracle attestation layer: a Schema.org revenue event fact statement published as a signed on-chain datum using an Aiken validator built to match Orcfax’s real FsDat datum shape. Went through three rounds of security review, all findings fixed and re-published on-chain. Current publication at transaction f0ed0879366b2c01e59bfaaab920062a9f690d403d2741373a5ac26529ccb203.

VAL-005 proved the intelligence layer: a Fetch.ai uAgent deployed on Agentverse calling ASI Cloud for market benchmarking and returning results as Orcfax COOP-compliant fact statements.

VAL-006 proved the settlement layer: a stablecoin payment splitter deployed on Celo Sepolia, distributing USDC payouts to multiple recipients in a single transaction, compatible with Opera MiniPay.
