🇻🇳 Cardano Vietnam x Over Guild: MEETUP #4 — Midnight: Privacy & Zero-Knowledge - Recap

Recap: Cardano Builder Series Meetup #4 — Building Privacy with Midnight

Cardano Vietnam x Over Guild
07 December 2025 | Da Nang City, Vietnam

The fourth installment of the Cardano Builder Series landed in the coastal innovation hub of Da Nang on December 7, 2025.
Organized by Over Guild x Cardano Vietnam, this meetup shifted focus to one of the most intellectually demanding yet critically important topics in Web3: data protection and privacy-preserving computation using Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK-SNARKs) through the Midnight Network.

This session continued the Builder Series’ commitment to exposing Vietnamese developers to foundational “hard tech” topics that are essential for real-world blockchain adoption.

:small_blue_diamond: Key Highlights

  • Total registrations: 83
  • Actual attendance: 42
  • Registration Link: MEETUP #4 — Midnight: Privacy & Zero-Knowledge · Luma
  • Demographics: A mix of curious junior developers and computer technology students
  • Engagement: Intense focus during the Compact language live coding session
  • Community takeaway:
The misconception that “Privacy = Criminality” was actively challenged. Builders came to understand that Midnight is about Freedom of Association and Regulatory Compliance, not secrecy for wrongdoing.

1. Opening

The atmosphere in Da Nang was one of focused curiosity.
The opening remarks clearly distinguished between:

  • Secrecy — hiding everything
  • Privacy — selective and intentional disclosure

Organizers highlighted a key barrier to enterprise blockchain adoption: data exposure on public ledgers.
The session framed Midnight Network as a solution that allows builders to protect sensitive data while still proving validity and compliance, addressing both enterprise needs and regulatory expectations.

2. Keynote Session — Midnight & the ZK Paradigm

Topic: Midnight Network Solution

The keynote session delivered a technical breakdown of the Midnight Partner Chain, moving beyond surface-level explanations to explore how Midnight integrates with Cardano at an architectural level.

Core topics included:

The Technology

An introduction to zk-SNARKs (Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge) and how they form the cryptographic backbone of Midnight.

The Language

The unveiling of Compact, Midnight’s domain-specific programming language designed to make writing ZK circuits accessible to developers who are not cryptography specialists.

The Use Cases

Real-world examples illustrated the power of selective disclosure, including:

  • Identity verification (e.g. proving you are over 18 without revealing your date of birth)
  • Private and verifiable voting systems

3. Hands-on Activities for Builders

Staying true to the “Builder Series” spirit, the room quickly transitioned from slides to code editors.

The hands-on challenge focused on building a simple smart contract using Compact:

  1. Environment Setup
Installing the Midnight developer kit and required extensions.

  2. Circuit Writing
Coding a “Private Coin Flip” application, where the result is verified on-chain while the input data remains private.

This exercise helped participants concretely understand how zero-knowledge logic is expressed and compiled within the Midnight ecosystem.

4. Special Feature — Student & Junior Developer Q&A

This session emerged as one of the most engaging moments of the meetup, driven by sharp, implementation-focused questions from junior developers and students.

Key questions included:

“Do I need a PhD to write ZK Proofs?”

  • Concern: The mathematical complexity of zk-SNARKs felt intimidating.
  • Response: The speaker explained how Compact functions as a high-level abstraction layer.
Just as developers don’t need to write assembly to program in Python, builders don’t need to manually construct polynomial constraints to build on Midnight — the compiler handles the underlying ZK mathematics.

“How do we prevent ‘dark’ finance?”

  • Debate: Students raised ethical concerns around privacy.
  • Insight: The discussion focused on Opt-in Compliance.
Midnight enables privacy by default while allowing dApps to share viewing keys with auditors or regulators when required, bridging Web3 freedom with TradFi compliance.

“Where do I start?”

  • Roadmap:
Builders were advised to begin with TypeScript to understand front-end interactions, then move into Compact tutorials.
The Midnight ecosystem is actively seeking developers who can connect user experience with privacy-preserving logic.

5. Community Reflection

The Da Nang community demonstrated a strong appetite for deep technical topics.
While zk-SNARKs are often perceived as intimidating, feedback showed that the hands-on approach and practical tooling made these concepts tangible and approachable.

This meetup successfully planted the early foundations for a privacy-first developer sub-community in Central Vietnam — one ready to engage with global challenges in blockchain privacy and compliance.

Acknowledgements

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Cardano Foundation, Project Catalyst, and the global Cardano community for their continued commitment to advancing education, research, and builder empowerment.

We also thank every participant, developer, and student who joined this session with curiosity and focus.
Your willingness to engage with complex topics such as privacy, zero-knowledge proofs, and regulatory-aware design is what made this meetup both meaningful and forward-looking for the Cardano builder community in Vietnam.
