Summary: Building on Cardano – Connecting to the Real World

In the 74th edition of the Developers Office Hour, host Darlisa Consoni welcomes Cash (CEO of Anvil Development Agency) and Patrick (COO of Anvil) to discuss their mission to simplify the Cardano development journey and bridge the gap with traditional real-world businesses. Anvil started informally five years ago, building out foundational minting and staking tools that have serviced 229 clients and minted over 500,000 digital assets to date.

The Tooling Suite: Weld, Anvil API, and Hodei
The team has built a robust suite of products designed to streamline the developer and user experience:

  • Weld: An open-source wallet connector inspired by the Solana ecosystem. Funded in Catalyst Round 11, Weld supports all Cardano wallets, including unverified ones, in a single, easily integrated package.
  • Anvil API: A proprietary transaction builder and metadata platform built completely with Anvil’s own sweat equity (without external funding). It currently services over 200 clients and manages between 1,500 to 2,000 transactions per month.
  • Hodei Wallet: A semi-custodial “cloud wallet” funded in Catalyst Fund 14. It uses native mobile authentication (such as Apple’s Face ID) to sign transactions, acting as a secure SIP-30 wallet that eliminates the friction of writing down seed phrases for mainstream users.

WayUp & TradeUp: Evolving the Marketplace
Anvil operates WayUp, the top Cardano marketplace for native assets. To appeal to traditional businesses, the team is actively rebranding the platform from an “NFT marketplace” to a “digital asset marketplace,” acknowledging that corporate clients heavily dislike the term NFT. WayUp currently hosts over 17,500 listings and has seen a massive spike in active traffic (averaging 3,000 new visitors a day). Anvil is also developing TradeUp, a sister platform focused on physical collectibles (such as luxury watches and graded cards) authenticated via on-chain digital twins.

Real-World Use Cases: Blom and Sellout.io
Anvil utilizes a “Trojan horse” strategy to onboard traditional Web2 companies to the blockchain.

  • Blom: Blom is an industrial coatings manufacturer. Instead of forcing blockchain technology on them, Anvil first built a fully customized Web2 quoting platform that optimized their sales pipeline, reducing the quote time from two hours to just 30 minutes. Having successfully solved a real business problem and earned Blom’s trust, Anvil is now planning to integrate a public blockchain ledger into their quality assurance, supply chain, and inventory tracking.
  • Sellout.io: Sellout.io is a massive ticketing platform in the United States that sells over 250,000 tickets annually. Anvil successfully completed Phase 1 by building a Cardano backend that mints every ticket as a native SIP-68 asset.

Compliance, Stablecoins, and the Treasury Pain Points
To attract institutional issuers, Anvil is currently applying for Catalyst funding to integrate the programmable token standard SIP-113 directly into WayUp. They see asset-freezing capabilities and on-chain royalty enforcement as mandatory prerequisites for institutional Real World Asset (RWA) providers. They are also hyper-focused on integrating USDCX into their API to unlock deeper retail liquidity on Cardano.

However, Cash shared deep frustrations regarding the Cardano Treasury voting process. To scale Sellout.io into Phase 2, Anvil spent 12 months curating the client and had a million dollars in matching funding lined up. Unfortunately, the grueling and highly public Twitter/X drama surrounding the Treasury proposal completely scared the Web2 client away, causing Anvil to lose the project. Cash stated that the team will never go through the direct Treasury process again, choosing instead to seek funding through professionalized institutional platforms like the Draper Dragon Orion Fund or Alpha Growth.

Top Five Q&A (FAQ) about Anvil and Real-World Adoption

Question 1: What is Anvil’s core philosophy when onboarding Web2 businesses to Cardano?
Answer: Anvil believes in a “Trojan horse” strategy where blockchain technology takes a backseat to actual business needs. Instead of immediately pitching Web3 concepts, Anvil first builds standard Web2 software to solve a client’s immediate operational problems. Once they have established trust and delivered measurable results, they introduce blockchain as an underlying infrastructure layer to improve supply chains or data tracking.

Question 2: What is the Hodei wallet and how does it solve onboarding friction?
Answer: Hodei is a semi-custodial cloud wallet designed to make blockchain interaction so easy that “any parent can use it”. It uses native mobile security frameworks (like Face ID) as the transaction authorization. This completely removes the intimidating requirement of writing down and managing 24-word seed phrases, which traditionally causes a massive drop-off in user adoption.

Question 3: How did Anvil establish trust with the paint manufacturer Blom?
Answer: Blom was originally running its entire quoting process manually using disparate Excel spreadsheets. Anvil built them a fully customized digital quoting tool that brought uniformity and reduced their quoting time from two hours to 30 minutes. This successful Web2 delivery built a strong relationship, paving the way for on-chain inventory and quality assurance tracking.

Question 4: Why does Anvil heavily prioritize the integration of SIP-113?
Answer: Real World Asset (RWA) and institutional stablecoin providers require a level of control over their assets. While Cardano’s native tokens are highly secure, they are permissionless bearer instruments that cannot be frozen or easily subject to regulatory compliance. Incorporating SIP-113 provides programmable tokens, allowing platforms like WayUp or ticketing systems like Sellout.io to enforce ledger-level compliance rules, asset freezing, and royalties.

Question 5: What was the main issue the team faced with the Cardano Treasury process?
Answer: The team described the direct Treasury process as highly stressful and unprofessional. Despite having a massive client (Sellout.io) willing to migrate 250,000 annual tickets to Cardano, the chaotic Twitter/X arguments and lack of professional feedback loops from voting delegates completely terrified the traditional Web2 company. This lack of institutional cohesion ultimately cost Anvil the client, prompting them to avoid the direct Treasury in the future.
