Someone stole my Daedelus wallet password and the 12 recovery seed words

Hello jushold-87,
FYI, I am the real owner of the wallet. I guess I’m royally screwed. As of last night, I opened the wallet from my computer and the amount is still intact. Hopefully the real thief is so ignorant, he does not know what to do with the password and recovery words. Thanks for your feedback. Shunya

I don’t remember the spending password at all. I haven’t deleted the old wallet per your advice.I could get into the wallet from my laptop but I can’t do anything with it since I don’t have the password or recovery phrases. As of last night, the fund is intact. Guess the thief is so stupid(fortunately for me) that he does not know what to do with the password and recovery phrases. Of course, I was more stupid by taking the paper notebook full of passwords to the store in the first place. Thanks again.

I am the genuine person who lost the passwords. I filed a police report the very day I lost it. The Officer in charge told me that the CCTV camera of the store was of not of any worth to get a clear image of in store activities as they had installed the bare minimum quality of cameras .The camera of the entrance he said was useless too.

I see your conundrum:

  1. You can’t remember your spending password, but have access to your wallet. Yet, you don’t have your 12 words to restore it on another computer. This means you can’t transfer your funds out.

  2. The thief has your 12 words and can restore/transfer your funds anytime.

In this situation, your only option is to keep guessing your spending password (people try going to psychics or hypnosis) till you find it. There is no other option for you.

You are working against the clock as the thief can restore your wallet at any time and gain access to your funds.

ADA-Fan. Thanks for your input.

I hope you find it… maybe the thief has no idea what those 12 words are and threw them away. That would give you ample time to recover your money.

That said, it could make sense to look at garbage cans withing a .5 mi radius from the location where you lost your notebook. If garbage truck hasn’t come you might have a chance to find what you are looking for.

Good idea.

@shunya sorry that you are in this situation. As others already mentioned, try to guess your spending password. unfortunately I do not have enough ADAs, if I do one day I will spread them in small amount in different wallets.

actually, I think justhold_87 is correct. We never know who we are helping. If the thief has that paper notebook, he wouldn’t be asking those questions and he would be already transferring the ADA to his account since he has all the needed information.

However, if the thief stole a laptop, then it makes sense. Say laptop was not protected with password, he finds Daedelus, opens it, sees ADA, but cant transfer it because he doesn’t know the spending password. He asks questions here and creates that story with a paper notebook. Besides, I cant really imagine that someone who buys significant amount of ADA would take the only paper with hand written seed words for a walk around the neighborhood (not even talking about the spending password being there as well).

No offence shunya if you the owner, its pure theory

Appreciate all forum participants’ theories and inputs. To reiterate again, I am the real owner of the lost passwords. I will not cry over spilled milk anymore and will never repeat the stupid mistake again and back up my passwords in the future. At this point, only a miracle will bring back my funds. As the saying goes, Pray to God, but don’t forget to tie your camel to the post. " Thanks everyone.

Shunya - no miracles or deities needed.
I would have moved the Ada as quickly as possible. If you don’t have a second wallet then that would be to the exchange where you purchased it. Once there it is safe. Next step would be to delete that wallet ( so you don’t accidentally use it again ). Create a new wallet. Once it has updated move the Ada from exchange to new wallet. Thats it.

Of course you need your seed or password. Without it you are SOL. Always keep a copy of seeds and passwords in multiple secure locations like a safe, relatives house, safe deposit box, etc.

You could look for a hacker that might be willing to break your password for a bounty.

Sorry about this dilemma, Shunya.

I’m about to challenge dogma and commit computer security heresy here in what I’m about to recommend you do in the future.

Bill Gates, Trump, even Charles H. of Cardano are figures in a public eye and with more wealth to steal then the case with myself. Dogma is to have a trillion different passwords and over complicate things even if your a homeless dude on Skid Row. But if one can’t remember their password I would question the level of “security” in that. What I’m suggesting is you and I may not be equal to a Bill Gates and we may not require equal levels of security. My suggestion is discard dogma and just create-in the future–a password you can remember. That is… unless you are some really rich person (because high tech computer thieves target rich people or people in the public eye and not average people).

Well… I live in the inner-city, my chances of being shot, stabbed, cracked over the head with a pipe by a thief or criminal are high. The chances of some savvy, high tech computer geek thief in the hood spending hours or weeks trying to break my password is low. I probably have a better chance of winning the lottery and Halle Berry randomly calling me up on the phone and begging me for sex.

Very good suggestion. Thanks Ruslan

Vantuz: LOL @ that cartoon.

With password breaking programs it’s not difficult to hack simple ones so I disagree. Most people choose something like a birth-date and their cats name. That can also be gleaned from their facebook page. It is easy to use a password manager. Only 1 password needs to be memorized. Then you can make all of the high entropy passwords you want. Then you buy a physical password notebook. That is your back up where all passwords are written down. That is easy and much more secure than fluffy82.

Random passphrases are easier to remember. Most people don’t even do that though
