Decentralised Social Media

Is anyone working on decentralised social media - just wondering.

Mastodon is a great one, I think Billy The Dev (one of the core developers) is still an ADA holder, not sure though as we haven’t tooted in a while haha.

Or do you mean someone from the community developing a decentralized social media platform on top of Cardano?

I meant generally.

I don’t really care for decentralized social media as much as I care for pro-1st Amendment social media, where Google, FB, Twatter or whomever don’t get to modify what is legal, regardless of whether it appeals to me, you or anyone.

The only platform I know of that does live and die by the first amendment in the USA is Gab.com.

I know gab does, and I know they are doing fund raising. Problem is they have been pushed around by hosting providers and domain hosting providers. If Torba would decentralise, those threats wouldn’t hold weight.

Decentralization reduces accountability. What you want is balance. If you’ve a fully decentralized platform full of child porn in the name of “free speech”… you might think you’re winning something while in fact you’re losing. If you draw the ire of people… no technology is going to save us. So be careful what you wish for… or you might just get it, except it will come with strings attached. Ever seen that movie “Bedazzled” with Liz Hurley and Brendan Fraser? You should.

It’s coming, https://solid.inrupt.com

Solid empowers users and organizations to separate their data from the applications that use it. It allows people to look at the same data with different apps at the same time. It opens brand new avenues for creativity, problem-solving, and commerce.

Amazingly enough I was just reading about this not even a week ago… Anything Tim Berners Lee is solid in my opinion

Just for my own clarity: I like the fact that we would be in control of our data on our personal “POD”, but would I be “forced” to provide access to my POD in order to have access to an App? Sorry if this is obvious…

Not obvious at all, I had the same thought, no you do not have to allow others into your pod.

Inrupt/Solid definitely deals with the privacy / who controls / owns the data issue. Not sure if it will do much for censorship - correct me if I’m wrong.
