Just saw the Foundation’s DRep delegation announcement - will this really boost developer participation?

Hey everyone,

I was scrolling through X a few hours ago and came across the Cardano Foundation’s announcement about delegating 20 million ADA each to seven DReps representing the developer and builder community.

It honestly got me thinking…

The idea behind it is to empower builders and technical contributors who’ve been underrepresented in governance - especially during key processes like the Intersect budget discussions. I understand the logic and appreciate the effort to include more of the people who actually build the ecosystem. But at the same time, I keep wondering:

Will this really lead to meaningful developer participation in governance, or just more visibility for a few?

Some questions on my mind:

  • Will this inspire more devs to get involved, or will they feel left out unless they’re already well-known?
  • How do we measure the success of this move a year from now?
  • Could this also be a step toward more focused delegations in other areas — like educators, researchers, regional hubs, etc.?

As someone deeply engaged in the African Cardano community and actively learning and participating in governance, I’m really curious to hear how others view this.

Is this the right move? What do you think?

Well there’s a lot to wonder about especially the stake - 20M each. Could the course have helped decentralisation even better if the stake was lower? 10M each for instance would support 14 of such DReps, whereas 5M would support even more.

It’s a great move to support DReps, especially those who are doing extremely well in terms of governance participation and I support CF for taking that step. However, the impact could have been optimised even better and maybe they should consider supporting more with reasonable stake in subsequent cohorts.

Congratulations to all the DReps who received the delegation. They very well deserve it.

I think the Cardano Foundation’s decision to delegate 20 million ADA to DReps representing the developer and builder community is a positive step towards increasing diversity and inclusivity in governance, as it acknowledges the important role that technical contributors play in the ecosystem. However, to ensure that this move leads to meaningful developer participation, it’s essential to establish clear guidelines and metrics for measuring success, such as increased proposal submissions or improved representation of underrepresented groups. Ultimately, this initiative has the potential to pave the way for more targeted delegations in the future, potentially leading to a more robust and representative governance structure that incorporates diverse perspectives and expertise.

That’s a great point, sir. Do you think the Foundation should’ve used a public nomination or application process to select the DReps? Might have made it feel more transparent and inclusive.

100% agree with you. Without measurable goals, it’ll be hard to assess the real impact.

Absolutely, anything done in the open public attracts trust even though the industry is supposed to be trustless.

Hello MrKarma,
all the existing DReps are listed on sites like https://adastat.net/dreps and it is clear who are builders, so there was not a need to come up with another application process that would include only a subset of the Dreps listed there.
