Why smart contract of Cardano (KEVM & IELE) uses etc but does not use ada?

I don’t understand why smart contract of Cardano (KEVM & IELE) uses etc but does not use ada?
When smart contract run, gas is etc ? Ada for what? Not for smart contract?
Please teach me!

The smart contract software is embedded into a customized version of the ETC client Mantis because it was easier to implement the testnet that way. In the future it’ll run on Cardano of course.
