Call for Artwork: Design the New Cardano.org Header

:cardano: Dear Cardano Community, :cardano:

We are happy to announce a creative opportunity for you to leave your mark on Cardano. As part of our ongoing efforts to showcase the vibrant spirit and diversity of our ecosystem, we invite community members to contribute artwork for the next header on Cardano.org, the entry point to the Cardano ecosystem.

:art: Theme:

The header should reflect the core values and vision of Cardano: decentralization, innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity. It should also capture the forward-looking essence of our community as we continue to build an impactful blockchain ecosystem. Let your imagination run free and show us what Cardano inspires in you. Whether abstract, futuristic, or minimalist, all styles are welcome as long as they capture the essence of the ecosystem.

:memo: Guidelines:

  1. Dimensions: The header should be adaptable to multiple devices and designed with a responsive aspect ratio to ensure optimal display across various screen sizes.
  2. Format: Submit your artwork as an SVG (vector format) for static images, as well as WebGL for other kinetic and interactive digital art formats.
  3. Design Theme: Create a design that aligns with the Cardano spirit—decentralization, innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity. Whether abstract, futuristic, or minimalist, express your unique interpretation of Cardano’s vision.
  4. Originality: Your submission must be original and unpublished. Avoid using copyrighted material or unrelated graphics.
  5. Style: Be creative! Submissions can include abstract designs, illustrations, animations or other digital art forms. (Please don’t submit more than 3 designs, focus on quality instead of quantity)

Please take note of any additional competition terms and legal notices below.

:ballot_box: How to Submit:

Upload your design by 23:59 UTC on January 15th, 2025, using one of the following methods:

  1. For static images, post a screenshot of your design in the Submission Thread and send the SVG file to community at cardanofoundation dot org with Subject: Artwork Contest.
  2. For dynamic, kinetic, or interactive art (e.g., WebGL), create a pull request against the “artwork-contest” branch in GitHub - cardano-foundation/cardano-org: The Cardano Website and share a screenshot on the Submission Thread.

Additionally:

  • Include a short description (150–300 words) explaining your artwork and how it reflects Cardano’s ethos.
  • If you create an interactive header (e.g., a pull request with code), please describe its functionality and how to interact with it.

We’ve provided a template for uploading your work and a demo page to test your creations. Note that no files are sent when using the demo, you must follow the instructions described above to submit your work.

  • Licensing: All submissions will be added to an open-source repository under the Apache 2.0 license. The design should integrate smoothly into the current website aesthetic and should be compatible with a professional, clean look. Other than that, we want to see your unique interpretation of the Cardano vision.
  • Legal Notice: This is not a public offer and does not create any obligation on the Cardano Foundation. The submission of a design is an offer of the designer to enter into an agreement with Cardano Foundation and license the design under an Apache 2.0 license against a prize set by Cardano Foundation according to the above. The license should not be revocable. The agreement is concluded upon the Cardano Foundation informing the designer of the prize. Cardano Foundation decides on the winners at its entire discretion. Designers should have no claim whatsoever for not receiving a prize.

Are jpegs or png also allowed ? Some artists only work with bitmap images and software.

By Header do you also mean creating the Hero section ? Or just the Header it self which is composed with the Cardano Logo, Nav Menus, Github Icon and Light/Dark mode button !

Hello,
its the hero header section. To be very specific:

if you want to participating by creating just an image you need to replace: https://github.com/cardano-foundation/cardano-org/blob/staging/static/img/hero-header-welcome-fallback.jpg

In that case you can use this tool for preview: https://cardano.org/demo-artwork-contest/ I got already the feedback that people don’t see the “choose file”-button so please see this screenshot:

if you want to get a little more fancy :smirk: and participate by creating code, it should go in this component: https://github.com/cardano-foundation/cardano-org/blob/staging/src/components/Layout/WelcomeHero/index.js

Hello,
Are there any requirements regarding font type? If code is implemented, are the “where to get ada?” and “start building” buttons expected to redirect the user already, while maintaining the information?

How many submissions are allowed?

The contest is only for the background that goes under the text not for the text or buttons themselves.

Font is Chivo. Please see this thread in the GitHub of the site for general branding guidelines around the Cardano branding: https://github.com/cardano-foundation/cardano-org/discussions/73

While it depends on the actual solution, I would expect that for example a WebGL background would not touch how the buttons work. But if you have anything in mind that you do not want to write here, please feel free to send me a dm here in the forum. Thanks

Could you tell cardano ambassadors about the contest, so they can inform people about its existence on social channels ? And also get the link pinned on the Cardano telegram ? Thank you !

This is a great initiative to promote creativity in the Cardano ecosystem

We already informed the Ambassador and will announce it on Telegram. Thanks!

I hope that it is done fast then because days are passing by quickly and not many people are aware of the contest yet. No YouTube ambassador channels mentioning it, no tweet on cardano founding entities’ Twitter accounts and not yet pinned on telegram. Thank you !

Only in case this was not clear: nobody tells Cardano Ambassadors what to say/report/content they create or otherwise, they decide for themselves.

That’s a good thing. I am just being insistant to make sure they are all properly informed

Hello, I can not find the artwork contest branch.
Is it already in GitHub or should I wait a couple more days?

Hi, I haven’t found an artwork-contest branch in the website repository.
Are we expected to create it? Once created, should a pull request be made from a personal fork?

Thanks!

This is just for interactive images. :arrow_down_small:
