Catalyst Weekly #121: We Swapped the Engine Mid-flight!

Hello beautiful soul,

The first week of the Community Review is officially behind us, and what a milestone it’s been!

Catalyst Fund14 marks a massive step forward. For the first time ever (in addition to submissions module) we’ve also moved our entire review process from the legacy Ideascale platform to a brand-new one. This was a huge undertaking, but we’re incredibly proud of how the community embraced the change.

We successfully swapped out the engine mid-flight and achieved performance parity with the old system. We’re now back at cruising altitude and moving on to our next objectives.

Here are some highlights from the first week:

  • 779 Proposers
  • 1,643 Proposals (pre-moderation)
  • 3,841 Activated Community Reviewers
  • 2,103 Reviewers who submitted at least one review
  • 25,331 Total reviews submitted

Community reviewers have another full week to submit their reviews before we move into the moderation stage. If you missed last week’s newsletter, be sure to catch up. We covered three key topics:

  • A basic overview of the Community Review stage
  • How/where to view all submitted proposals
  • How to get ready for the voting power snapshot on September 11.

A quick refresher on the Fund14 moderation bounty pilot:

  • Advancement to Voting is Not Guaranteed
    • Keep in mind that advancing in the process does not automatically secure a spot in the final voting stage.
  • Ongoing Proposal Moderation
    • The Catalyst Team and our Moderators will be actively cross-checking all submissions over the coming days and weeks against the category briefs and regulations.
  • Fund Rules Compliance
    • A number of submissions may not be in full compliance with the Fund Rules. If this applies to your proposal, our team will email you with the necessary actions to take in the coming week.

Wishing you a great week ahead.

This is indeed a welcome change, and therefore worth persisting through some rough spots… as @dannyribar you & I discussed in email to the Catalyst Team, it’s understood these are consequences of launching a “MVP” free from lingering dependencies on Ideascale.

The community’s “embrace” of Fund 14 is therefore with anticipation of a better quality presentation & more navigable / searchable data structure of proposals and proposers on the Catalyst web site. For examples: the fact all proposers with both past & current proposals now have two separate profile pages, e.g.:

… as well as the astonishingly difficult proposal editor on the Fund 14 version of the Catalyst App which would not even export or import HTML (edit, p.s. to this post: all we got for “export” into JSON was a proprietary, uneditable text stream; the real problem was not being able to cut, copy or paste HTML or any formatted text to or from the editor).

Now that we have “gotten off the ground” I think all of us look forward to an “engine” that flies better after “landing” the current MVP. :folded_hands: I am certainly happy for the progress but would also please insist on more public detail about the Team’s specific roadmap for coming features and bug fixes… to help current & future proposers plan our proposal submissions and related messaging, marketing, and tooling.

We have lots of work ahead of us. In true Catalyst spirit - iteration and innovation never sleeps. With the first set of foundational peaces are now in place - doors are wide open. What typically used to fall on deaf ears of 3rd party software account managers - finally has a viable pathway within our own tech stack. Let’s go after it, Robert. Thanks for being aboard all along. Appreciate you.

NB: CatalystApp had an option to export each own submitted proposal JSON and also import in back. Could be useful.

NB2: Catalyst github repos are public! Great place to follow along what’s cooking.
