I missed the meeting. I focused on developing TEFL ark with relevant happenings as a pleasant surprise.
My learning this week comes from meeting with the founder of the Manta Sail Training Centre. I was delighted to find a poster with SDG’s on the wall.
This enabled discourse about co-creating meaning.
We talked about the origins of the Centre: Vietnam experiences climate change and environmental issues first-hand: in 1997 an unforseen phase transition in the marine ecosystem lead to fisheries collapse and yield decreasing by orders of magnitude. The proposed solution was to teach fishermen teaching and watersports. The outcome of that now, 20 years later, is a thriving tourism industry along the coast and some of the people from the are becoming world-class athletes and trainers.
Confronting the changes in the environment we now face different issues. I pitched the idea of teaching English through sailing as a revision of the centre’s model: one of challenges of learning a second language is lack of pressure to use the language for problem solving, where sailing provides amazing scaffolding with rich domain of discourse and opportunities to engage in live conversations around the sport, the environment, and governance.
The word governance is a tension. Some cultures consider it a civic duty, in others its out of public discourse whatsoever. But in some cultures it is seen as contrarianism, delinquency and subject to persecution.
