We had a substantial amount of ADA spread across two Daedalus wallets. One of our computers was hacked, and almost all ADA stolen from both wallets. This was not a scam, this was a theft and it is clear to see the withdrawal of ADA to another wallet. I have reported this to Action Fraud (UK), who will then pass it on to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau for investigation. In the meantime, I would like to know what support Cardano offers eg. tracing the ADA’s and following the theives trail. I have emailed Cardano twice with no response. This is a crime and surely they must have a department that can provide support?
Who did you email? There is no entity “Cardano”. Cardano is an ecosystem with some founding entities – Cardano Foundation, IOG, Emurgo – but they are not operating the network, “just” developing the software for it, doing education and such things.
I’m not aware of any department of any of them specifically tasked with that.
The general support – e.g. for Daedalus at https://iohk.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new or even just users here or in other forums – can help tracing the transactions, though. It’s a public blockchain, transactions are public and can be traced by anyone through any of the multiple block explorers: https://adastat.net/, https://cardanoscan.io/ etc.
Finding out when a transaction went to a centralised exchange and which it was is often a little tricky, though. And from that point, only that exchange can help tracing further.
The email is report@cardano.org
Thank you for the support link. I’ll send a request there and hope to engage with someone to help tracing. I’ll also look again at the block explorers. This is all helpful…thank you!
On a slightly different note, though related. Does anyone here who has had the same situation - ADA stolen - have any experience in using private investigators? There are number that come up on a search though most seem to be cowboys. I have found one that is legitimate and checks out credentials etc. These investigators specialise in cyber crime.
Might be good if you can describe how your computer was hacked. This could help in analyzing your problem and also to help others take precautions to prevent happening again.
The issue of loss of assets due to scam and theft is alarming.
I am still shocked as to how they were able to hack your wallets, is it possible that they were monitoring your wallets?
I believe Cardano will definitely have a support unit on matters like this. You just need to get in touch with the right Cardano support unit on this to prevent future loss of funds.
I’m don’t know the details on how the computer was hacked. It was my partners computer, he is tech saavy and we have good security on our macs. The hacker was able to obtain the password and phrase. We’ll be running a deep scan and that may flag up the activity. I’ll share that once I have it.
I agree, anything we can share here will help others.
Agree, the loss of crypto through scam and theft is a far bigger problem than I could have imagined. It’s only because it has happened to us, that I am now aware of how enormous an issue this is. Laws are having to change quickly for law enforcement to catch up, and keep up, with the criminals. Were the hackers monitoring our wallets??..makes me shudder to think that they might have done that!
In the meantime, I have had help from Cardano. They have been brilliant so far, and able to provide a transaction tracing report. They are quick to respond, efficient and friendly. I continue to be in contact with them to find out more.
The sticking point is the slow bureaucratic system of the police fraud department. It is their job to step in and take action on the hackers, and this is a painful wait while my case is moved through the ‘correct’ channels.
