Which directory do I run this in?
I would navigate to the folder containing your metadata json file, then run it exactly as the tutorial has it typed (assuming you named it pool_Metadata.json).
So: cardano-cli stake-pool metadata-hash --pool-metadata-file poolMetaData.json

I created the file in the root. so, I just kept moving it to the last folders that we were using in the examples (of stake pool school) till I got something that looked like a hash. Is it possible to work even with this message?
Did u see the difference between your command and the command provided by #David_Stitt?
Try to not include shelley subcommand!

The tutorial does have shelley in the example. In the in previous tutorials I have had the same message and changed it to “mary” and it worked… why would it sometimes work to remove shelley and sometimes work to use “mary” new era?
we are in Mary era right now, perhaps the guide it is not updated for Mary era.
