After Exodus Update - 0 ADA Balance & Byron Address switched to Shelley

Hello everyone,

Yesterday, after a long time (purchase date July 2020), I checked my Exodus wallet to transfer ADA. The balance was displayed correctly after logging in, but a message appeared saying I couldn’t send because Exodus needed to update. No sooner said than done, but after the update, the balance remained at 0. It’s noticeable that a different address is now stored; previously, it was Byron (Ae2tdPwUPEZGNHLEepEN2ycHeUv2aEjJJJsSh9CdUXxTJQQjjodA6ckTdpr), but now it’s Shelley (addr1q98rsqy9dclwj5lzt0jdugzv2v8ny8aq9sfnmmhxlrye4f2w8qqg2m37a9f7yklymcsyc5c0xg06qtqn8hhwd7xfn2jsvqhmzt). I’ve since contacted Exodus Support, who previously gave me feedback (I should copy the private key and set up a new portfolio, which is where the new address was noticed), but so far without success. I also tried to restore balance using the twelve-digit Exodus recovery phrase via other wallets, but that was also unsuccessful (moonstake.io, adalite.io, eternl, yoroi, medusa/adawallet.io). Unfortunately, I don’t know the private key from the old address, as I assumed I had sufficient “security” with both the Exodus password and the recovery phrase.

Admittedly, it was reckless not to have written down the private key of the corresponding public address and to rely on Exodus, just as it was to have missed the switch from Bayron to Shelley, as it’s becoming increasingly difficult to make the switch these days, and (almost all) wallets no longer support the Bayron wallet. Perhaps someone has an idea and can help? I’ve also already tried downgrading to the previous Exodus version using the Time Machine backup, but there, too, only the new address is displayed.

Thank you very much!

Can only say: There was a thread over a year ago with no solution: https://forum.cardano.org/t/exodus-wallet-byron-era-question/126040

Don’t know if the private key would have helped. Probably also a proprietary format and none of the other wallet apps supports importing it. They only support importing seed phrases and if Exodus did something else with the seed phrase than everybody else, then there is no way out.

Only hope would be that you get them to tell you exactly how they derived Byron keys and addresses from seed phrases five years ago. Then, you or someone you really trust could try to redo that to send the ADA to a new wallet.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve read through the thread, but unfortunately, none of it worked, or it’s changed since then. I hope Exodus finds a solution for this, and maybe I’m not the only one with this problem? I’m happy to hear any ideas, thank you.

As I said:

There was no solution in that thread.

Nobody knows what Exodus did back in the days and they are the only ones who could tell (if the people who knew even are still at Exodus and if they care enough to answer questions).

A quick update for anyone who might be experiencing a similar issue: After contacting the very competent Exodus support team, they attempted to resolve the issue with a new update (25.24.2). After the update, I created a new portfolio and copied the private key from the old wallet/portfolio (which still showed a balance of 0). After storing the private key in the new portfolio, the correct balance was displayed, and I was able to transfer the ADA.

Wow, that’s awesome! I really wouldn’t have placed a bet on it and am very positively surprised.

(Still would be curious what their Byron derivation is/was. Maybe, I can see something from that new version.)

Yay! I am happy that you finally got a solution.
