Cardano Foundation’s communiqué on unofficial giveaways
Dear Cardano Community,
As some of you may be aware, there has been a notable increase in the number of unofficial giveaways that promise financial return in the form of crypto assets for the deposit of ada to a given wallet address. Instead, the unsuspecting user loses the entirety of their original deposit and receives nothing in return.
These schemes are an unfortunate consequence of Cardano’s increasing popularity in the cryptocurrency community. The perpetrators of these schemes use various methods to defraud victims, including impersonating influential figures in the Cardano ecosystem, claiming to be Cardano partners, hijacking YouTube accounts with many thousands of followers, and posing as the official social media accounts of Cardano, the Cardano Foundation, EMURGO, or IOHK—or employees thereof.
The Cardano Foundation would like to take this opportunity to warn and remind you that no one acting in an official capacity from the Cardano Foundation, EMURGO, IOHK and any of our community ambassadors or partners will ever promote or endorse giveaways of ada—or any other asset—in any way, shape or form whatsoever.
We cannot stress enough that there is no way for us to assist you with lost funds if you should participate in these unofficial giveaways. In all cases, these schemes are perpetrated by bad actors who will keep your original ada for themselves, even though they may appear to originate from entities affiliated with Cardano. There will be no way to retrieve your funds.
As a result, we would like to reiterate that only communications originating from official channels—linked below—should be taken at face value, and these channels will never promote or endorse giveaways of any kind. You can read more about fund security and safety on the Cardano Forum here.
The Cardano Foundation is acutely aware of the importance of these issues to our community and we are working closely with our community ambassadors and relevant law enforcement agencies to identify, cease, and prevent these fraudulent giveaways from occurring in the future.
We would like to thank our wider community for being proactive in bringing these issues to our attention, and we hope you all remain safe and diligent as we move into an exciting new era for Cardano.
