Basia, can you let me know if the explanation below makes sense?
Firstly, it was me that emptied the wallet on May 14 2019. I moved ada into a Yoroi wallet, as a short term measure, while I upgraded the Daedalus wallet from version 0.8.2. I joined the forum at the time (using the name syd-cypher). RobF helped me manage the wallet upgrade - see attached. The Yoroi option in May '19 was a fix (see attached), but I didn’t leave my ada in the Yoroi wallet, I moved them from Yoroi to a current Daedalus wallet. And I think this is what happened: The 12 word seed I used last week when restoring a wallet, is the very old 0.8.2 12 word seed, dating back to 2018. When I moved ada into a new Daedalus wallet in May 2019, would a new 12 word seed have been generated? I think I used the wrong (old) seed last week and if creating a new Daedalus wallet in May 2019 generated a new seed, I’m assuming that is the seed that will enable me to restore my ada.
Reading this, I was thinking of my own ADA. I’m sure it is all still there, but I haven’t dared open that computer because I think keeping it switched off is a good way to avoid possible hacks. When will be see a hardware wallet for Daedalus, do you think? Is it weeks, months, or next year?
Somebody here will be able to verify this; but I don’t think an old wallet will open. Mine didn’t, I was forced to upgrade to version 2.1. A red message appeared, couldn’t get past it, had to restore / instal etc. Maybe don’t leave that computer shut down for too long. I’ve lost all my ada. You don’t want that.
Trying to figure this out, thanks for your input, but don’t think there’s a fix. IOHK site does warn about the possibility of hacks. Can’t explain this any other way.
Hi ADA4010, thanks for the reply. I’m ok, I upgraded the wallet then transferred the balance to Shelley, delegated to a pool, then closed the machine again. There is a risk of hacks, but not a high one. However I am very keen to get over to a hardware wallet as soon as I can.
Do you remember if the transaction were you moved your funds from Yoroi to Daedalus was the only one in that wallet? If so, it was a new one and in that case this is what happened:
You moved ADA from Wallet A (Daedalus, 12 word seed) to Wallet B (Yoroi, 15 word seed)
You moved ADA from Wallet B to Wallet C (Daedalus again, but different 12 word seed)
You restored Wallet A, which you emptied in step 1.
Yes, you’re correct, that’s exactly what happened in May 2019. Last night I restored a wallet using the second seed phrase and my ada and transaction history are now restored.
One other question: is there any downside to restoring a wallet - the same wallet - on more than one computer? I’ve restored the wallet on a laptop, and I’m thinking about also restoring (the same wallet) on my desktop machine. It’s that alright or ill advised?
Cardano community you are so amazing. I doubt there is any other community as helpful as this. I am so proud to be a part of such a great community and promising project.
