Focal points of the week

Cardano has proven to be more decentralized, based on current discussions regarding IOHK’s request to upgrade nodes to latest version

Charles Hoskinson’s request to upgrade main net nodes to the newest version 1.35.3 stumbled upon resistance from the SPO community.

Prominent community members opposed the call to upgrade their mainnet nodes as they felt like this new version wasn’t properly tested. Even though the discussion intensified over the weekend with hundreds of tweets going back and forth, it does show that community devs are capable of, not only challenging IOHK, but also of performing thorough testing on the Cardano testnets - with great results. It also revealed how strong, passionate, and decentralized our community really is.

For a full overview of what transpired over the past few days, we recommend watching this summary from community member and SPO, Andrew Westberg. Upon further testing conducted by multiple SPOs and IOG staff over the weekend, on Sunday morning Andrew confirmed that “The fix in 1.35.3 is successful and confirmed by many other SPOs that helped test.”

Cardano Cafe Japan

Cardano Cafe, an offline community space for the Cardano blockchain, has now opened in Otemachi, Tokyo on August 27th. The Cardano Cafe accepts payments in ada and acts as a metaverse-linked offline community space for the Cardano blockchain and Web 3.0.

Chosen by the community in Catalyst Fund 8, the cafe also serves to provide community members and interested parties with daily lectures on all things Cardano and Web 3.0, helping to expand the education of Cardano within Japan while providing them a safe and relaxing space to enjoy a variety of snacks and beverages.

In addition to ada payments, customers can also use original Cardano drink tokens in the form of an acrylic coin that they can then exchange for drinks or special craft teas sourced from the finest ingredients all over Japan.

Catalyst Circle changes their election process

The Catalyst Circle, a “human sensor array” that monitors the current state and plans regarding governance in Project Catalyst, consists of different members who fulfill specific roles representing all stakeholder groups of Project Catalyst.

  • General ADA holders: Quasar
  • Funded Proposers: Mercy A
  • Stake pool operators: Rhys Morgan
  • Toolmakers and Maintainers: Joey Chessher
  • Community Advisors: Tomi Astikainen
  • Cardano Foundation: Felix Weber
  • IOG: Kriss Baird

The community must elect all roles besides the appointed IOG and Cardano Foundation representatives. Past elections of the Catalyst Circle took place in a zoom call leveraging google forms to conduct the voting process. On August 04th, the circle members decided that new voting mechanisms should be leveraged for the upcoming election, such as DripDropz and potentially the Catalyst Voting app (source). This shift towards an on-chain voting mechanism will allow for a more accessible and transparent election process.

Hard fork

An irreversible change to a blockchain protocol. Cardano uses a hard fork combinator to ensure smooth upgrades. Unlike earlier blockchains, Cardano hard forks save the chain history and do not cause disruption for users.

Cardano Wiki

Why stake ADA from your own Cardano wallet?

To decentralize the network, it is important that stakers use their own wallets and they do not stake on centralized exchanges. Staking on exchanges is dangerous and in the event of a hack, stakers can lose their coins. There are known cases where the owner has set up an exchange only to rob it himself. Not your keys, not your coins.

The Cardano ecosystem offers many opportunities for coin owners to support the ecosystem and profit at the same time.

By selecting a pool, the staker supports the activity of the pool operator. The positive contribution of pool operators can encourage adoption of the protocol and DeFi services. Centralized exchanges usually run their own pools and do not care about the development of the ecosystem.

Owners of ADA coins can vote in Catalyst and select the project they consider beneficial. There is a small reward for voting. If you leave the coins to the exchanges, they may get the reward instead of you.

If you have coins in your own wallet, you can participate in ISPO, or you may be eligible for some airdrop. Moreover, you can use DeFi services, which offer a higher yield than staking on the Cardano protocol. Over time, services will arise that offer a yield for the service while allowing you not to miss out on staking rewards.

If you leave ADA coins on centralized exchanges, the exchange will lock the coins and not allow you to use them. If it offers a higher yield than the Cardano protocol, it has to take a risk it won’t publicly acknowledge. He’s probably using some DeFi service or lending the coins to someone for interest. If you leave ADA coins on the exchange, the exchange will profit from them, but you bear the full risk of loss. source

Spotlight for Community-built Tools

The Developer Portal was created to foster a home for developers who are dedicated to building tools and services on Cardano. The platform allows developers to not only collaborate on projects but also to showcase their works.

The Developer Portal aspires to become a credible source where users can search for tools to fit their needs.

Community projects already running on mainnet are encouraged to add their projects to the Developer Portal.
